Facts on Bike Carriers

Bicycle carriers or bicycle racks are devices mainly used to carry bicycles safely and securely during long periods of transportation. Bike carriers may be attached to different types of land transportation vehicles such as buses, automobile cars, pickup trucks and motorcycles. These bike carriers are utilized usually to carry bikes by enthusiasts in certain places that can only be accessed by use of motorized vehicles.

Different types of bicycle carriers are mainly categorized according to the type of land transport vehicle that mounts it. Bicycle carriers that are placed in buses can usually be found in the front part of the bus. In cases where the built-in bicycle carriers are not anymore used, they can be safely and easily be set aside.

There are also different types of bicycle racks for different automobile cars. In case the individual uses his or her car to carry the bicycles, they can either be secured on the roof or the rear end of the car. If the roof of the car is big enough, there are bike racks that can accommodate several bikes for the travelling groups.

If a towing device such as tow hitch is available, they are also used to mount bike racks and can be attached at the chassis of the car. Depending again on the type of vehicle used, tow hitches can be utilized as well.

For even more security and stability, bicycle enthusiasts can also choose to place their bikes in carriers and at the same time fixing the wheel. This way of bicycle mounting provides additional support by fixing the bike in an upright position. This can be done simply by clamping the posterior wheel and the front dropout (the hole in the bike frame where the axel is attached).

The process will involve disconnecting the front wheel. The front wheel can be secured on the separate available blades. A different approach to provide additional vertical support is through clamping of the top tube which may be performed in the case of using back hitch mounted carriers.

Right now, a lot of bike carriers have been created more for pickup trucks that provide easier transporting solutions. Manufacturers have also developed special carriers for the recumbent and tandem bicycles.

Bike racks or carriers are definitely recommended for people who have bicycles and wants to ride it in areas other than their own community. To purchase such product, it is recommended to talk to an expert or someone from a bicycle shop near your area.
