we are going on a carribean cruise should we bring our own snorkel gear?
definitely bring Your Own, especially if you plan on snorkeling more than once. it cost me $10 to rent flippers and Snorkel Mask when I was in St. Lucia. Although they did de-fog the mask for me, it looked like the only desanitization they did was they rinsed it under a shower head when I was done. I'm sure that the saltwater killed most of the germs on the mouthpiece, but still... Also, because the mask was not adjusted for me, I had to spend a lot of time in the water trying to readjust and it was quite a nuisance for me.
I ended up buying a Snorkel Set in CVS pharmacy when we stopped in Puerto Rico. It was $20 and I can use it over and over again. Even if you find that the flippers take up too much room in a suitcase, the snorkel mask is definitely worth it. if you don't want to spend a lot of money, go to a place like walmart that sells them at a cheaper price. They tend to be higher at sporting stores, although the quality may be higher? The CVS one I got is great. I saw ones at the Dollarstore but they probably let in water!
In terms of cost effectiveness, if you plan on snorkeling more than once on your trip, they are a good investment! also keep in mind that at some places, you might not even be able to rent them, especially if you plan on going to more remote beaches.
