Scuba Regulator Set
How long could a 3000 psi Scuba Tank let out air constantly at 5 psi?
Like if the regulator was set at 5psi and was stuck open or smthn?
The interstage pressure (which is normally set at ca. 9-10 bar [132-147 psi] above ambient) is only relevant if the regulator first and second stages are functioning correctly.
If the Second Stage valve spring tension is too low (e.g. 8.5 bar, when the interstage pressure is 9.0 bar, giving a pressure imbalance of 0.5 bar [7.5 psi]), you will get a slow leak of interstage pressure air out of the second stage (as a quiet but audible hissing). Since the rate at which air is lost will be proportional to the difference in pressure between the interstage air and the spring, it will be nearly constant, and relatively slow--the cylinder will take at least a couple of hours to vent.
If the First Stage fails, this effectively produces an 'open line' to the cylinder interior, and regardless of the interstage pressure setting, the cylinder will most likely vent the majority of its air in less than 5 minutes. The rate of air loss will slow as the cylinder pressure approaches the second stage spring pressure, and the regulator will likely stop venting air after 10 minutes.
Provided the regulator remains attached to the cylinder valve, in neither of the above cases will the cylinder vent completely. Rather, it will vent until the internal pressure has dropped to match the compression of the second stage valve spring--so depending on your second stage adjustment, you'll always be left with around 7-10 bar (103-147 psi) in the tank.
The cylinder can only be vented down to ambient pressure if the regulator is removed, and the cylinder valve opened. The venting rate will depend on how far the cylinder valve is opened, but on a standard cylinder valve, anything more than about half a turn is as good as fully open. If the valve is fully opened on a fully-charged cylinder (not recommended, as the resultant cooling may cause condensation to form inside), the cylinder contents will be near-completely vented in less than 5 minutes.
