how far underwater can you go with a dry snorkel?

Railroad is close to the correct answer. I watched a record breaker on Discovery Channel where a man went down to something like 430 feet!! What I am amazed at, is that he had some kind of air pressure balloon type of device to bring him back to the surface quickly- wouldn't this cause serious bends?! I know that Scuba Divers are trained not to rise from deep water too fast because it causes microscopic bubbles in your blood to expand as you rise through the different pressure levels in the water. Nevertheless, he did not seem phased by this so I'm still curious. He also did the same thing with his wife and I believe they went down together (no pun intended - tsk tsk!) to roughly 300 feet for the first couple to do this together to break a deep diving record. Neither of them got the bends! I would like to know how!
